The English were introduced to turmeric via India. The Indians probably got it from Indonesia. You can easily find Kunyit (Turmeric) in the dry, powdered form but it is far better as a fresh root. The pleasing orange color of most curries is the result of kunyit's many healthy carotenoids. These are rich in powerful antioxidants and known to improve circulation, reduce histamine levels and promote natural cortisone production. I read recently that the low incidence of Alzheimer's disease in India is thought due to a high intake of turmeric there. In Indonesia, kunyit is a prime ingredient in jamu health tonics.

For jahe for information on freezing, drying and measuring turmeric. If you stain your clothes with kunyit, hanging them out in the sun will bleach out the orange color.
