Kencur (Lesser Galingale)

Kencur (Lesser Galingale)

Kaempferia Galanga L.

This rhizome has only recently been outside Shouth-east Asia. Now you can find Kencur (Lesser Galingale) in some Asian markets under its Thai name of pro hom. Dried kencur powder is sometimes available by its Malay name of cekur. Failing that you can substitute the greater galingale, laos root. Medicinally kencur is used as a traditional treatment for coughs and colds and is considered a mind hallucinogen. It is also said to be good for flatulence but only when rubbed on your belly. See jahe for more information on working with rhizomes. Kencur makes appearances in karedok, lotek or gado-gado, and sate lilit.
